Best Buys
Argentina is still shining among wines with the best quality to price ratio. This time, four Argentinian wines were included in Wine Enthusiast’s recommended selection.

Wine Enthusiast, one of the most important wine magazines in the American market, published the Best Buys of 2008 in its November edition, where four Argentinian wines were showcased. The list includes wines with scores above 85 and prices below u$s 15. The wines featured in the list were selected by the editors of the international magazine. Immersed in crisis and anticipating a complicated 2009, American consumers will be choosing more affordable wines. That is why the magazine focused on value, in order to provide a tool for consumers to find the best wines at reasonable prices.

The editors have selected the best current available offers in the market, the magazine claims. Moreover, this year there has been innovation: seeking to reflect the rising trends in retail sales and in restaurant menus, the Best Buy list was organized by style. Hence, categories include “Fresh, Aromatic Whites, Rich, Full-Bodied Whites, Rosés and Light Reds, Medium-Bodied, Fruit-Forward Reds, Big, Powerful Reds, Champagnes and Sparkling Wines, Fortified and Dessert Wines.”

The Argentinian winners

The four Argentinian wines that made it to the list did it in four different categories. With regard to Fresh, Aromatic Whites, Tomero Torrontés 2007 (Salta, Argentina), $ 12, was featured as one of the Best Buys. Tomero is a new line from the Carlos Pulenta group, and it is sourced from Salta. This wine scored 89 points.

In the Rich, Full-Bodied Whites, bodega Peñaflor 2006 Elementos Chardonnay-Viognier (San Juan, Argentina); $13, had one of the highest scores in this category -89 points.

The Medium-Bodied, Fruit-Forward Reds category showcased Mendoza’s Trivento 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, which is available in the market for $11 and scored 87 points.

Finally, in the Big, Powerful Reds category Bodega Chakana was selected for the second consecutive year. Last year, the chosen wine was Chakana 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, which earned 90 points and cost 11 dollars. This time, Chakana 2006 Malbec, which happens to have the same rating and price, was selected.

Wineries pay a lot of attention to these rankings because Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator function as market reference points. Moreover, consumers are increasingly basing their wine choices on these lists.

Receiving this kind of recognition from the international press is very significant for Argentinian wines, as the United States is the most important market for Argentina, representing 24% of total exports in terms of value, and thus the first export destination for both bulk and bottled wines.

This recognition is another example of how Argentina is steadily increasing in its presence and status in the global wine market.
