Argentina keeps gaining international relevance through the efforts of its wineries. This week, WineSur features a winery rewarded for its tourism efforts and another one for its wine sales. bodega Salentein and its gold medal “Museo Killka”, the one-of-a-kind Uco Valley’s cultural and gastronomy space of Bodega Salentein, received the International Gold Medal in the Arts and Culture category in the Best of Wine Tourism contest organized by the Great Wine Capitals Network. This is the maximum award for wineries seeking to develop wine tourism, including academic and cultural efforts in each one of the eight world capitals: Melbourne, Bordeaux, San Francisco - Napa Valley, Porto, Cape City, Bilbao-Rioja, Florence and Mendoza. Killka Museum won after a tough competition among some of the wine world’s icons such as Robert Mondavi in the United States, Villa Petriolo in Italy, Fundación Dinastía Vivanco in Spain and Besucherzentrum Haus Kupferberg in Germany. “This is something for Mendoza and the country to be proud of, as it is the first time Mendoza earns the maximum recognition for arts and culture at the international level,” Rafael Calderón, Salentein’s General Manager, commented. “It is important to highlight that Museo Killka offers local and foreign visistors a space dedicated to the exhibition and transmission of knowledge through cultural conservation, research and communication. It is home to a permanent collection of contemporary Argentinian art and Dutch paintings from the 19th and 20th century in a building covering 5740 meters, equipped with the technology standards applied in current museum studies. The pieces in temporary exhibitions may be bought to their authors,” Julieta Gargiulo, the museum’s curator, explains. “In the two years since it was opened, it has hosted ten temporary exhibitions of paintings and sculptures; ten concerts featuring choirs, classical music, folklore, opera (with Argentinian and foreign singers); museum studies seminars and courses taught by international museum directors; and the unprecedented “Wine Moments” exhibition, comprising European and Argentinian paintings from the collections of the National Fine Arts Museum and the Provincial Museum Emiliano Guiñazú”, Gargiulo adds. “Moreover, Museo Killka contributes to its community through cultural communication programs: didactic concerts, choirs, interactive shows. It also invites schools to visit its facilities for free, to appreciate its exhibitions, contributing as well to activities organized outside of its space,” Gargiulo concludes. Bodega Renacer in the TOP 100 For the second consecutive year, Bodega Renacer was included among the 100 most sold wines by the prestigious online retailer Wine.com. This is a very significant acknowledgement because it is based on consumer preference, which sets it apart from other rankings based on the opinion of a magazine or journalist. Inquired by WineSur, the winery’s owner, Patricio Reich, said that “we are very happy about this result; it is very rewarding to know that are wines are consumed by thousands of people and selected on the basis of an important criterion: consumer preference. This forces us to keep making efforts to deliver high quality products for our consumers around the world.” The winery is pleased to see that this year the 2007 Punto Final Clásico took a great leap from the 91th position it held last year to the current 27th.
