Wine Enthusiast is one of the most important magazines in the United States. Every year, it awards and acknowledges the effort of all those people involved in the wine world. As part of the Annual Wine Star Awards 2008, Mendoza was chosen this year’s wine region. The winners will be invited to an awards ceremony on January 26th at the New York Public Library.

This year, there were 55 nominees, five for each category. The winners were selected for their outstanding contribution to the wine world, with a special focus on accomplishments achieved throughout 2008, the magazine explained. Moreover, a new category was upheld in this edition, seeking to acknowledge the Innovator of the Year. Awarded candidates will be featured in a special edition to be published on December 15th.

In the Wine Region of the Year category, Mendoza, a Western Argentina province, was the frontrunner. According to Wine Enthusiast, Mendoza “is the heart, mind and soul of the Argentine wine industry, which has been growing by leaps and bounds in the past few decades. Approximately 80% of all wine made in Argentina hails from Mendoza, a province that sits at the eastern base of the Andes Mountains, roughly 650 miles west of Buenos Aires.”

“Mendoza’s terroir is high desert, with vital water coming from Andean snowmelt. The signature wine of Mendoza is Malbec, a runaway winner in export markets across the globe. In recent years, Argentina has grown into the world’s fifth largest wine producer, magnifying Mendoza’s importance and prominence. Today Mendoza is a wine region on par with many of the best in the world,” the magazine added to complete the description of why this outstanding Argentinian wine region was selected.
